Vail Resorts Buys Afton Alps, Plans to Connect Area Skiers With Mountain West

$

Paul Augustine with some early snowmaking equipment at Afton Alps, in Afton, MN, which he founded with his brother Robert and friend Thomas Furlong in 1963. A local ski pioneer, Paul died New Year's Day.

It you have a season pass to Afton Alps, this post may just make your day—and I’m not writing about the snowy forecast.

Vail Resorts, Inc. has purchased Afton Alps—and season pass holders will immediately receive a 25-percent discount off of lift tickets at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone, Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood this season.

Vail Resorts purchased Afton Alps and Mount Brighton in Michigan for $20 million. The two ski areas give Vail Resorts access to more than 468,000 active skiers and snowboarders in the Twin Cities and Detroit metropolitan areas.

Vail Resorts plans to:

  • Improve snowmaking, parking and access to provide a more consistent experience throughout the ski season;
  • Look into opportunities to add new summer activities;
  • Redesign and updated terrain parks;
  • Offer coaching and instruction for skiers of all levels;
  • Have dedicated racing programs;
  • Expanded dining and entertainment options at the base area,
  • Create opportunities to connect guests from each of these ski areas to its seven world-class resorts in Colorado and Lake Tahoe through season pass and other lift ticket products.

“These acquisitions are part of a new strategy for Vail Resorts to drive season pass sales and build broader guest loyalty by looking at premier smaller ski areas located near major urban markets,” Rob Katz, chairman and CEO of Vail Resorts said in a news release.

Afton Alps is the largest ski area near a major city in the Midwest with 48 trails on nearly 300 acres, 18 lifts, four base areas, night skiing and riding, tubing and an 18-hole golf course.

Vail Resorts is planning season pass products for Afton Alps in time for the 2013-2014 season pass sales period, beginning in March 2013.

Man Pulled Over for Grubbing on McDonald's While Driving

McDonald's logo.

It wasn’t intoxication or distraction from using a cell phone while driving that caused a 19-year-old man to repeatedly cross the centerline on Greeley Street last week, but rather McDonald’s.

That’s right, a 19-year-old Oakdale man told police he was driving poorly because he was grubbing on some McDonald’s while driving. It’s unclear from the police report exactly what was so tasty the man couldn’t keep his eyes on the prize.

Here’s what happened, according to a Stillwater Police report:

An off-duty Bayport police officer reported a driving complaint. Stillwater police located the truck, saw the driver cross over the centerline and made a traffic stop.

The driver told police he was driving poorly because he was eating McDonald’s. Police did not notice any signs of impairment.

The man was given a verbal warning and sent on his way.

Oakdale and the surrounding area received up to 11.7 inches of snow after a blizzard rolled through much of the state Sunday.

The National Weather Service predicted the Oakdale area would receive up to 10 inches of snow from the storm

The North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District did not cancel school Monday due to the storm and started classes on time.

A spokeswoman of the Oakdale Police Department said calls regarding accidents in Oakdale were not bad despite the storm.

Sunday’s snowstorm was the biggest for the Twin Cities since Feb. 20, 2011, when more than 11 inches fell, according to WCCO meteorologist Chris Shaffer .

The biggest storm last winter (Dec. 3) was only 4.2 inches, Shaffer said.

As of 6 a.m. Monday, the Minnesota State Patrol reported 637 crashes statewide, with 63 involving injuries and one fatality, according to Lt. Eric Roeske, of the Minnesota State Patrol. Almost 1,139 spinouts and slides off slippery roads also were reported, he said.

As for the rest of the day, Oakdale should see occasional flurries Monday afternoon and a high of 13 degrees and a low of 4 degrees. Tuesday will also see flurries with a high of 22 degrees.

Pair Found Guilty of Stealing Car, Deputies Also Find Drugs During Search

An Oakdale man and Maplewood woman accused of stealing a vehicle last year from a Target parking lot were found guilty in court last week.

Christopher John Klindt, 33, of Oakdale and Rachel Lee Watters, 30, of Maplewood were found guilty in Washington County District Court.

According to the criminal complaint:

The Washington County Sheriff's Office received a copmlaint in December 2011 regarding an abandoned vehicle in St. Croix Beach. The vehicle was a red Pontiac with no license plates and had a flat tire

Deputies disovered that the Pontiac had been stolen from a Target store in Vadnais Heights.

Deputies spoke with a nearby resident who said they saw Watters and Klindt in the abandoned car earlier that day. The resident said that Watters and Klindt said that the two were at his residence earlier and while he was upstairs the pair had stolen his red truck.

Klindt and Watters were located with the stolen truck. Inside of the truck deputies found several syringes and drug paraphernalia in addition to several pills.

Watters admit that the pills were hers and that she and Klindt had stolen the vehicle from Target.

Klindt was found guilty of receiving stolen property and Watters was found guilty of aiding and abetting theft. The court stayed their sentences and both have been placed on five years of probation.

STORM AFTERMATH: Motorists Seek a Quicker Afternoon Commute

$
0
0
This snow accumulation map shows snowfall totals from the Dec. 9 snowstorm.

Most Twin Cities freeways were in fair condition at midday Monday, a couple hours after one of the most nerve-racking morning rush hours in recent memory.

Commuters across the metro still were stuck in traffic on snow-covered and icy roads heading after the traditional 9 a.m. end of the rush hour.

The Star Tribune says that traffic on Interstate 694 in the north metro was crawling as late as 11 a.m.

Shortly after 12:30 p.m. Monday, the Minnesota Department of Transportation was reporting that most major highways in the Twin Cities—including I-35E, I-35W, I-94, I-494 and highways 3, 52, 55, 61, 62 and 169—were in fair driving condition. Roads were treated, but snow and icy patches were evident.

Authorities were investigating a number of crashes during the noon hour. Among those incidents were a jackknifed semi-trailer on eastbound I-94 between Radio Drive and Woodbury Drive, a pair of crashes on I-494 near exits 59 and 60 and two crashes on I-494 near the Roberts Street exit.

MASS TRANSIT
Here is the latest statement from Metro Transit regarding Monday’s commute:

At 10:30 a.m., there are 283 buses operating on 45 routes. About 65 [percent] of buses are on schedule; the average delay is about 8 minutes.

Light rail is on schedule. There are no more scheduled Northstar trips until this afternoon.

On its website, Minnesota Valley Transit Authority says that buses may be delayed Monday because of weather and road conditions.

CRASH TOTALS
The wintry weekend weather kept law enforcement and emergency personnel busy.

The Minnesota State Patrol says 654 crashes and 1,299 vehicle spinouts and vehicles off the road were reported statewide between 9:30 p.m. Friday—roughly when the first of two weekend snow events began—and this morning. Of those crashes, 67 involved injuries and one involved a fatality.

A 21-year-old Winona man was killed when the car in which he was riding was struck by a tractor-trailer that lost control on Highway 61 in Goodhue County on Sunday, says the state patrol.
